Analytical frame for identifying when system simplification severs consequence from lived reality.
Abstraction harm occurs when a system’s representation of a person, event, community, or decision becomes operationally stronger than the reality it is supposed to describe.
CivicBrands uses this frame to evaluate infrastructure, records, interfaces, procurement systems, and AI-mediated workflows.
The core diagnostic questions are:
- What reality is being compressed?
- Who can inspect the compression?
- Who can contest the resulting representation?
- Where does accountability attach?
- What happens when the abstraction is wrong?
The purpose is not to reject abstraction. Durable institutions require abstraction. The purpose is to make abstraction visible, bounded, reversible where feasible, and accountable to the people affected by it.
