If you are turned away from one shelter, ask explicitly what shelter or hotline they refer
to. They are required to refer. Note the name and number before you leave.
Facing eviction
Do not skip court. A default judgment is much worse than appearing. The day of court,
even an hour before, you can sometimes get a lawyer.
Free legal representation in eviction — but only if you live in KCMO city limits. Income-eligible KCMO renters are entitled to a lawyer. Independence, Lee's Summit, Liberty are NOT covered.
Rental assistance is usually one-time, paid directly to a landlord. Funds run out and
reset on a schedule that varies by program. Call early in the month.

Cooling centers may shift hours to align with tourist corridors during match weeks. If you
normally rely on a specific cooling center, call ahead each week to confirm it is still
open the hours you need. See crisis — heat & cooling centers.
